Prime TV Choices: 7 Essential Films This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the tyranny of female beauty along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. The veteran actress delivers a masterful acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and terrifying procedure called "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, leading to a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque story includes Keira Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take some time off from covering global conflict to board an opulent ship alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich passengers. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of the spirit. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor embraces his unique fame through this meta comedy caper. He plays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has left the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks used by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. Both actors are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
